The Point Cartwright Lighthouse was automated in late 1978 and officially opened on September 10, 1979 by the then Federal Transport Minister, Mr Nixon. The lighthouse is a reinforced concrete pentagonal tower surmounted by a concrete lantern. It has a total height of 32.4 metres and was built at a cost of $221,000 and is unmanned.

The path leading to the base of Pt Cartwright is a typical coastal boardwalk complete with several timber benches and walkways to the beach. The final climb is approximately 230 metres with walkers rewarded with sweeping views back along the Mooloolabah coastline and along the Kawana beach line.
