Fallout: New Vegas has better weapons, game mechanics, modding experience, and is much more light in the messages it sends. Fallout 3 has way better atmosphere and world design. In almost every location there is a story you can find on the walls or on the floor that you can interpret for yourself. Washington D.C. is just cooler in a post.
