Hopkins County Stew Contest Update
By Contributor. Published October 13, 2023. Every year on the fourth Saturday of October Hopkins County hosts its annual Stew Contest. This year's being the 54th anniversary the theme for the event will be the "Stew Bowl" which will inspire friendly (cutthroat) competition amongst the cooks this year. This year there are 177 stew pots.

Add diced chicken, salt, pepper, tomato sauce, diced tomato, salt, chili powder and paprika. Bring to a boil. Add whole kernel and cream style corn. Stir constantly (to prevent scorching). Bring to a boil. Reduce heat to simmer. If needed, add water to fill pot. Cover and simmer for 15 minutes, stirring as needed.

Applications are now being accepted for this year's World Champion Hopkins County Stew Contest, scheduled for October 27-28, 2023 in Sulphur Springs, TX. This event is hosted by the Hopkins County Chamber of Commerce and is $100 per 10X15 booth, or $75 for Chamber Members.

The Hopkins County Stew Contest - October 28, 2023. While the cooking competition began in 1969, Hopkins County Stew is a tradition that dates back as early as the late 1800s. The county had approximately 100 schools then, and it became customary to celebrate the end of each school year with stew suppers cooked in iron pots over an open fire.

The 53rd Annual Hopkins County Stew Festival, sponsored by Alliance Bank drew a huge crowd, with long lines forming more than an hour before serving time, with people eager to pay their $8 to partake of the entries, despite the whipping autumn winds Saturday, Oct. 22, 2022.

For just $8, attendees will receive a bowl (for all the stew they can eat), along with cheese and crackers. Then, if visitors want to take some stew home, they may purchase quart containers for $15 and enjoy the stew for many nights to come. October 27, 2023 - Burford Park was alive with people setting up for the 2023 Hopkins County Stew Contest on Friday. Virtually all the stew sites had equipment and canopies in them. Early set up is going well and spirits are high. Brian from CANHelp was busy getting their vender site ready. CANHelp is pulling double duty this year.

The 54th Annual Hopkins County Stew Festival endured through steady rain and mud on Saturday, Oct. 28, to crown winners in four cooking categories at Buford Park. The rain, which started before dawn and continued through the entire morning, didn't dampen the enthusiasm of the cooks, who provided chicken and beef stew for several thousand.
