The bridge was immortalized by the 1957 film 'The Bridge on the River Kwai' starring Alec Guinness, William Holden and Jack Hawkins. Although a work of fiction, the film succeeded in raising awareness of this tragic part of the Second World War and went on to win three Oscars.
