Willink's work of the 1930s is characterized by the display of the so-called 'bange jaren '30 ('anxious '30's) , a period where life was filled with fear and uncertainties and when the threat of war was very real. Many works feature threatening skies, empty streets and a stark contrast between light and dark.

Albert Carel Willink (* 7. März 1900 in Amsterdam; † 19. Oktober 1983 ebenda) war ein Kunstmaler aus den Niederlanden. Carel Willink war der Sohn eines Automobilhändlers in Amsterdam. De stijl is naturalistisch met expressieve kleuren en een aanzet tot vereenvoudiging van vormen. Dit is terug te voeren op zijn bewondering voor het werk van Paul Cézanne in deze periode. In 1919 koos Willink definitief voor het schildersvak en trok hij naar Berlijn. Daar schilderde hij vooral geometrisch-abstracte composities.
