Today I heard a Futterman OTL powering a pair of Quad ESL57s. The Futterman has been recently serviced and is in nice shape.. Futterman OTLs are the Holy Grail of tube amplifiers! I have three. A Harvard Music H3 using four 6HB5's per channel and a pair of H3aa's using six 6LF6's per mono amp. I have two pairs of Quad 57's and a pair of KLH.

The NYAL OTL-3 and the Prodigy P3 OTL are pretty much the same amps circuit wise except for a few minor changes. The only thing that strikes me as strange is that the P3 schematic I have shows considerablly lower running voltages then the original Futterman h-3 schematic using say 6FW5's of 6BH5's.

Extremely rare Futterman (Harvard Electronics) H3 OTL Stereo Power Amplifier. First owner and in very good condition. Acquired in 1980 and rarely used only by the owner. Julius Futterman himself modified this unit and put date and his signature on the underside of the transformer. (see picture)

I have used a variac to bring up the amp without tubes to check the transformer and power regulation capacitors. All seems fine.

The difference between an H3 and H3a is that Futterman used one single very large electrolytic capacitor to couple the output to the speaker, in the H3. In the H3a, he went to using a gaggle of physically smaller photoflash capacitors, which were the fastest available in his day.

3. What about 6 JJ Tesla EL509's per channel? Current wise that will match the 6FW5's since they have a max of 550mA and the JJ's are 500mA. 6 replaced by 6 does not cause me a transformer issue. The 6FW5's are octal as are the JJ's.
