Playing a Legendary campaign as the Roman Expedition and I've just hit the 540s. Emulating Belisarius, I've stayed as the expedition and had conquered North Africa. I lose a horde and John the Armenian to the Moorish invasion- it's a better way to go than death by hunting accident after winning the battle though.

But, if you prefer a more sandbox style of gameplay, or dislike the Roman team, you can still play as one of the other factions, but you won't.
