For almost one hundred years the Royal Victoria Patriotic Asylum (later 'School') on Wandsworth Common, South London, was the nation's principal orphanage for the daughters of British servicemen killed on duty. During World War I the building also served as the Third London General Hospital, one of the capital's 'Big Four' Territorial hospitals.
