Vintage Canteen Civil War
Civil War Style Canteen. This is my personal canteen that matches my half-seat saddle. It has basket weave tooling with the letter P in the center. It is Civil War style with a cork top; however, rather than using a tin canteen like the originals, this shell is stainless steel without lead solder. This makes for a long life even with hard use.

Canteens. Whether Union or Confederate, a canteen was essential for survival. Northern canteens were made from two pieces of tin that were soldered together and had a pewter spout with a cork. The canteen was covered with wool or heavy cotton and had a leather or cloth strap to be worn over the right shoulder and on the left hip with the haversack.

This is a reproduction of a canteen that is attributed to a Webster, Massachusetts militia unit ca. 1840. It is similar to other local volunteer militia canteens used in the United States before the Civil War. At almost 7" diameter it is larger than the common Confederate canteen. The band for the body is made from two pieces.

In the war it was not uncommon for soldiers on campaign to adapt equipment in the field for their needs hence a canteen half was split open and used as a frying pan. As far as the canteen half . . . . I've read where re-enactors attach the cooking canteen half to the actual canteen. Sounds like a great idea. The sutlers I've spoken to have told me that the canteen half is usually the lightest cooking thing they sell short of a $2-3 tin pie plate.

The tin shows a nice mellow gray patina over the body, with a couple areas of moderate surface rusting. The canteen measures right at 5.75 inches diameter by 1.75 inches wide. The sling loops are the smaller pattern, possibly intended for a cotton cord sling. There is a similar example in the book Civil War Canteens, by Sylvia & O'Donnell, on.
